Happy Pan African Womens Day
Today we celebrate her-story with Benin. This 30m statue, just unveiled in Cotonou celebrating the warrior women of the ancient kingdom of Dahomey, the only documented female army in modern her-story. They are called the Dahomey Amazons from Benin. The Black Panther Movies based the DolaMilaje off these amazing womxn. They were a Fon all-femxle military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey which existed from the 1700s until 1904. They are the only documented all female army in world history.

The origin of the Amazons is quite unclear. An account attributed it to King Houegbadja (who ruled from 1645 to 1685), the third King of Dahomey. The Dahomey Amazons were a frontline military unit formed during Queen Hangbe's rule, according to a local legend told by Hangbe's descendent who goes by the same name.
The modern-day Queen Hangbe resides in Abomey, a city in Southern Benin that used to be capital of the Dahomey Empire. Dahomey became an adversary to the British Empire after the abolition of slavery during the 19th century. They will also be represented in new film called “The Woman King” starring Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim and many more amazing folx as we wait for the movie premier critics are waiting to see if the representention of the Warrior Godesses will be more accurate than in the Black Panther movies.
