CHWEZI AFROCLIMATE Project
Simma Africa is on a journey to achieve irreversible progress towards gender equality and climate change using creative arts. COVID-19 has exacerbated existing gender inequities, with reports of rising violence against womxn, as well as higher adverse economic impacts caused both by increased unpaid care-giving and the fact that womxn work in more insecure, low-paid and informal jobs. Refugee, Native, indigenous womxn and LBTI womxn face compounded risks and barriers.
A feminist approach to climate justice thus means to address the issue of climate change as a complex social issue but also through an intersectional analysis that challenges unequal power relations based on gender and other characteristics, such as socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, sexual orientation.
The project will employ creative arts specifically Fashion exhibitions and HipHop Cyphers to create awareness and safe spaces which will aid conversations around friendly Climate Justice practices and Gender Equality solutions for Ugandan Natives, Refugee LBTIQ+ AGYW and their communities using a Feminist Afro-centric Approach. The project will form feminist social support groups as safer inclusive spaces for healing and continuous engagement of communities.
Staff will be able to communicate in the various local dialects (Luganda and Kiswahili) and will be able to provide age/gender appropriate information/ advice. The project will test an all-inclusive digital learning and self-care platform to increase Climate Justice literacy and access to Gender support for LBTIQ+, Refugee and Native and AGYW (18 to 30 years). Methods that will be employed include flyers, I.E.C materials, Tshirts, Social Media Platforms like twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram. We will also use social institutions such as churches, mosques, schools, groups and organizations.
